"This is the hardest place in the universe to be a filmmaker." The ocean has always challenged the people trying to tell its stories. For generations, much of what happened below the surface was out of reach. Without access, imagination filled the gap. Today, filmmakers can bring back footage from places few people will ever see, but the challenge remains. Low light. Constant motion. Pressure. Distance. An environment that resists every attempt at a steady, controlled shot. Beyond the Surface: What it Takes to Film in the Ocean is a new film directed and produced by Aamirah Isaacs, science communicator and Digital Correspondent Fellow at OceanX, created in partnership with the Institute of International Education. Over six months, Aamirah worked alongside the OceanX team to explore what it takes to tell ocean stories on camera, including a conversation with filmmaker James Honeyborne on the craft, patience, and difficulty of filming at sea..
