Sam Moses has been painting signs since he was 13 years old and, somehow, he’s still at it. The 75-year-old Brooklyn sign painter has spent more than six decades painting old school hand-painted signs across New York. If you’ve spent time in Bay Ridge, Coney Island or other parts of South Brooklyn, you’ve probably seen his work without even realizing it. He retired about 10 years ago, but Tommy Holiday convinced him to pick up the brush again. These days, a lot more signs are designed on computers and made by machines. Hand-painted signs aren’t nearly as common as they once were, but there’s something about them that you just can’t replicate. Every brushstroke has a little personality to it. They feel alive.
