Allievo Ufficiale dell’Accademia Navale Italiana 🇮🇹 Officer Cadets of the Italian Naval Academy 🇺🇸 • I was passing by Pier 86 on the Vespucci’s last day in New York and ran into two Allievi Ufficiali dell’Accademia Navale — cadets Jacopo and Antonio of the Italian Naval Academy. Wasn’t able to get aboard myself, since a private event was underway, but managed to snap a few photos with them before they headed out. The Amerigo Vespucci, the oldest ship still in service with the Italian Navy, trains cadets from the Naval Academy in Livorno. She’s named after Florentine navigator and explorer Amerigo Vespucci — the man who first realized the lands Columbus had found were part of a New World, a continent later named America in his honor. Fitting, then, that she docked at Pier 86 from July 4–8, 2026 as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, after sailing in the Sail4th 250 flotilla from the Verrazzano Bridge to the George Washington Bridge, past the Statue of Liberty. This marked her ninth visit to New York — her first came in 1933, at the end of her maiden transatlantic crossing, followed by 1951, and most recently 2000 and 2017. In 1962, the USS Independence famously hailed her at sea and, on learning her name, replied: “You are the most beautiful ship in the world” — a title she’s carried ever since. #italy #italia #roma #newyork #navy
