My father Robert shared the powerful story behind the six numbers tattooed on his arm. The numbers match the Auschwitz prisoner number of his close friend and Holocaust survivor Ernie Michel - a reminder of his friend, what the Jewish people endured, and why these stories must continue to be told. During the Holocaust, the Shema was recited by countless Jews in some of their most difficult and final moments. Today, these same words continue to connect generations of Jews to their faith, their identity, and one another. The Shema Initiative came to life to inspire Jews to pray and make it easy to read the Shema in Hebrew. Through free Hebrew-learning books and resources, anyone can learn to say these powerful words and connect more deeply to their meaning.
