A new study shows a link between a widely-used artificial sweetener and major cardiovascular events including death or stroke. Xylitol is found in numerous sugar-free candies, baked goods, nut butters, gums and even toothpastes. The study, released Aug. 26 by the European Society of Cardiology, was based on a long-term analysis on the effects of the additive which is widely used to replace dietary sugar. While low amounts of the naturally-occurring sugar alcohol is found in some natural foods, Xylitol is often added in high amounts as an artificial sweetener to dozens of foods, drinks and dental products. #xylitol #gum #sweetener #food #drinks #health #heartattack #stroke
