"My expectation of my own government is far better," said Anas Altikriti when talking to MEE about the recently revealed UAE covert surveillance operation that targeted him. ITV broke the story on Wednesday, revealing that a UAE-funded mercenary had been following Altikriti in 2016, registering details such as where he lived, his car, and even the door he used to enter his office at work. Abraham Golan, a Hungarian-Israeli citizen, had been in Yemen the year before and was paid millions of dollars by the UAE to run what he has described as a targeted assassination programme. Altikriti is a British academic, a former hostage negotiator, and the head of a London think tank called the Cordoba Foundation. In 2014, the UAE proscribed the Cordoba Foundation, alleging links to the Muslim Brotherhood, which the UAE regards as a terrorist organisation. The British government does not. In fact, in 2015, an official review found no evidence the group was involved in terrorist activity in Britain.
