Before Peter Jackson returned to Middle earth, he was almost going to make the one of the biggest video game movie adaptations ever attempted. In February 2006, Jackson visited Bungie Studios and posed with the team developing Halo 3. At the time, he was serving as executive producer on the planned Halo movie, with Neill Blomkamp set to direct and Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later, involved with the screenplay. The film was targeting a massive Hollywood production and was originally planned for a 2008 release. The connection to Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films went even deeper. His New Zealand production company and Weta Workshop became involved in developing the project, with Weta building physical Halo props and even a fully drivable Warthog. Some of the material created during development later contributed to Halo: Landfall, the live action footage used to promote Halo 3. But in October 2006, Universal and 20th Century Fox withdrew their backing after negotiations over the film’s financial structure broke down. The Halo movie was indefinitely postponed and ultimately never reached production.
