On the same day that Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, King Harald of Norway, passed away at age 89, we also learned of the death of the world’s youngest. King Rukidi IV of the Tooro kingdom, popularly known as King Oyo, ascended the throne at age THREE in September 1995, following the death of his father, King Olimi III. The 34-year-old king had recently been receiving treatment in the United States for a “critical illness.” His death was announced late in the evening of August 27th by the kingdom’s prime minister. Oyo reigned over more than 2 million people in Western Uganda, known as the Batooro. The Tooro kingdom is one of Uganda’s six traditional monarchies. His titles were *Omukama*, meaning "King," and *Rukirabasaija*, meaning "the greatest of men." He promoted transformative causes linked to socio-economic development, such as youth empowerment, education, sustainable agriculture, climate conservation, and HIV/AIDS awareness. Still unmarried at his death, he was widely seen as Uganda’s most eligible (and private) bachelor.
