Missouri has joined at least nine other states in rolling back access to gender-affirming care for transgender people in prisons. It's a stark reversal from the late 2010s and early 2020s, when prisons began providing this care after courts ruled that denying this care was a violation of the Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment. The Trump era ushered in a wave of anti-trans rhetoric and legislation, and now many of the laws and policies put in place after years of court battles are being rolled back.
