There are many, many reasons why it’s hard for people to stay healthy — physically, mentally and emotionally — in jails in the U.S., where most are awaiting trial, or serving short sentences for low-level offenses. What if you get your period? Or need to take a shower? People don’t always have access to basic hygiene products such as soap, toilet paper or tampons in jail. And if you’re too poor to buy underwear? St. Louis’ city jail policy says staff have to inspect the old pair before handing out a new one.
