When I was 4 years old, my parents saved money and sacrificed to put this piano in our house. My dad and his friend John each bought one so they could get a deal. I would play it endlessly as a kid. So many of my earliest musical instincts and inspirations came from it. My dad would bribe me to learn Bach and other classical favorites of his. I wrote songs for high school girlfriends on it. I took out my anger and sadness on it. It was an escape. If you knew me back then, I was the piano man — and this was my piano. It was on this bench, with these keys under my hands, that I realized from the time I was 6 years old all I wanted to do was put music into the world. I moved out of the house at 18 and became more interested in guitar — mainly because it was easy to travel. Over the years, the piano bounced around to different friends’ places. It was always hard to find a home for it during those transient years. For the last five years, it’s mostly sat in my basement, barely played. Today I had it tuned and fixed up. Sitting down and playing it again brought me right back to that place before any of this was a career, before there were records or tours or anyone listening — when music was simply the way I made sense of the world. This piano is going to be the sound of the new album. It reminds me of my mom and dad, of friends and family, of Buffalo. It’s beautiful. Good night 🌙 #Buffalo #singersongwriter
