70 years ago, more than 20,000 women marched through the streets of South Africa to stand up against apartheid and demand their freedom. This week, I had the honour of walking in their footsteps alongside Afghan women who are leading their own fight for freedom today. It’s been five years since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, and banned women and girls from education, work and public life. But Afghan women have never stopped speaking out. I’m grateful to President Ramaphosa for standing with them and supporting their call to recognise gender apartheid as a crime against humanity. It’s an important step toward justice for Afghan women and girls - and toward making sure this never happens anywhere else ✊🏽
