I’d like to challenge raccoon fans who make memes and art to be more conscious about the way you choose to portray raccoons. There are so many actually funny and clever things raccoons do, and their association with trash is simply them using their intelligence and adaptability to find easy food sources that we as humans are putting out in their homes. In addition to being a raccoon biologist, I’m an artist, and I’ll admit that I’m guilty of making art and memes that perpetuated the humorous association of raccoons with trash. However, I know better now. I know the harm that trash causes raccoons. And once we know better, we can do better. Won’t you do better with me? #LearnBiologyOnTikTok
