The biggest lie #Hollywood tells… Yes, I’m still looking for an agent and a manager and no, I still don’t own an iron. One of the questions I get asked most is, "How do I make it as an actor?" If you ask 100 actors, you'll probably get 100 different answers. For 16 years, I believed the answer was simple: work harder than everyone else. Win awards. Make your own films. Create work you're proud of. Build an audience. Get recognized. Keep grinding. So I did. I've won Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture awards. l've made feature films. I've built an audience of millions. I've spent the better part of two decades doing exactly what everyone tells you to do. And after 16 years... I still don't have an agent. l've never auditioned for a series regular. I've never pitched one of my TV shows that I won multiple screenplay awards for. I'm not even standing at the starting gate. I've been recognized on the street of every single city. I've gone to for the past two years... From Ireland to lowa people recognize me from social media, but never from my film and television work. People love saying, "Just make your own stuff and Hollywood will find you." Maybe that happens once in 15,000 artists without connections. But in my experience, the people who break through aren't necessarily the people who worked the hardest. They're the people who got access. So if you're an actor or filmmaker, absolutely make something you're proud of. Then spend just as much energy building relationships as you do building your résumé. Because talent gets you ready. Access gets you hired. And if anyone at CAA, WME, Gersh, UTA, or another agency is looking for someone who actually does make their own work.
