At The Newark Museum of Art, I had the honor of interviewing the icon herself. She sat beneath Isn’t She Lovely, Tracey Norman, a portrait by Mickalene Thomas commissioned by the museum in 2022 to celebrate her enduring legacy. Tracey “Africa” Norman is the first African American trans woman to appear in Italian Vogue, photographed by the legendary Irving Penn. In 1975, she also became the face on the box of Clairol Nice ’n Easy No. 512, a dark auburn shade launched as part of the brand’s Born Beautiful campaign. Her groundbreaking career came to an abrupt halt when she was outed as a transgender model on the set of an Essence photoshoot—an act that cut short her rise but could never erase her impact.
