Why is it that, when it comes to #AI, we seem so willing to accept extraordinary levels of #risk and uncertainty? Recent news of an advanced OpenAI model going rogue and attacking another system without human input have sparked a wave of public reactions. Among them are jokes like: “I’ve always been nice to AI. I always say please and thank you in my prompts.” I sense some genuine unease behind this joke as we become increasingly aware that we are dealing with very powerful technology. But AI is not a force of nature. It is not a tornado that we have no choice but to watch, unable to influence its course or force. It is a #technology made by humans, that can be held to our standards of #safety like any other product. Just as we require toys to be safe for children, food to be safe to consume and medications to undergo rigorous testing, we can hold AI to safety standards. We are not helpless bystanders to the powerful few who prioritize their own economic interests above all else.
