“This is just another photo.” Except this one took me five years to capture. Photographing a Belted Kingfisher exploding from the water with a fish remains one of the greatest—and most rewarding—challenges I have faced in bird photography. Even with today’s incredible autofocus and high-speed cameras, technology still struggles with this moment in the wild. A kingfisher can dive without warning, enter the water almost anywhere and emerge in a completely different direction. There is no reliable pattern to follow and only a fraction of a second to find the bird, lock focus and create the frame. It took years of missed dives, empty splashes, blurred wings and photographs without a fish before everything finally came together. Sometimes the final image looks effortless.
