You Won’t Believe Why Jellyfish Invade Oregon Beaches! 🪼 Every summer, thousands of jellyfish suddenly start appearing along the Oregon Coast, and there’s actually a reason we see so many this time of year. Warmer seasonal conditions, changing ocean currents, winds, tides, and food availability can bring huge numbers of jellyfish closer to shore. When winds and currents push toward the coastline, jellyfish don’t have the swimming power to fight against them, so some eventually become stranded on the beach. And they’re not all the same species. Moon jellyfish are recognizable by the four horseshoe-shaped structures visible through their bells. Crystal jellyfish are almost completely transparent and are famous for the green fluorescent protein, or GFP, that helped revolutionize biological and medical research. Pacific sea nettles have long tentacles and a much more noticeable sting, while lion’s mane jellyfish can grow incredibly large and have dense clusters of stinging tentacles. That’s why summer on the Oregon Coast can bring completely different jellyfish species onto the exact same stretch of beach. What jellyfish have you found where you live?
