Sony has argued in court that PlayStation players do not actually own the digital games they purchase, claiming the software is licensed rather than sold to consumers. The argument was made in an August 21 court filing responding to a class action lawsuit over California’s 2025 Digital Goods Law. Sony cited its PlayStation Software Product License Agreement, which states that “The Software is licensed to you, not sold.” Sony also argued that consumers could not reasonably expect to receive ownership of a digital game.
