
Between September 1 and 21, 2026, stargazers can look forward to a packed astronomical calendar featuring rare lunar occultations, meteor shower peaks, and ideal conditions for deep-sky observation. The period opens on September 1 with the peak of the Aurigids meteor shower, followed closely on September 9 by the peak of the September Epsilon-Perseid meteor shower, which will benefit from pristine viewing conditions due to minimal moonlight ahead of the New Moon on September 11. Consequently, the nights from September 9 to 13 will be the best time of the month to search for faint galaxies and nebulae in the pitch-black sky. During the first half of the month, the Moon will embark on a spectacular tour of the solar system: it passes near the Pleiades star cluster on September 3, glides by Mars on September 6–7, and executes a rare, dramatic lunar occultation of Jupiter on September 8, completely hiding the gas giant from view. Shortly after, on September 14, the thin crescent Moon will occult Venus, creating an extreme daytime close approach visible through optics. Moving into the second half of this period, the Moon reaches its First Quarter phase on September 18, leading into International Observe the Moon Night on September 19, when the long shadows along the lunar terminator will bring craters and mountain ranges into sharp relief.
