
Asteroid mining is a promising space industry aimed at extracting resources (platinum group metals, iron, nickel, and water) from near-Earth bodies, with commercial development expected to begin in China within 10–20 years. The primary targets for prospectors are carbonaceous C-type asteroids (rich in ice for producing rocket fuel and oxygen in orbit), siliceous S-type asteroids (containing silicates and metals), and rare but highly valuable metallic M-type asteroids, such as 16 Psyche, which are composed almost entirely of iron, nickel, gold, and platinum. As traditional mining methods struggle in the confines of microgravity, private startups AstroForge and TransAstra, as well as agencies like NASA and JAXA, are developing new autonomous technologies: laser ablation for vaporizing and capturing metal dust, magnetic separation for heating iron, and heat collection in sealed capsules for water collection.
