A magnetic field is a special, invisible form of matter that surrounds moving electric charges, currents, and permanent magnets, exerting mechanical forces upon them. Unlike an electric field, which can be generated by stationary charges, a magnetic field is born exclusively out of motion — such as electrons flowing through a wire or spinning around atomic nuclei. A defining characteristic of this field is that isolated magnetic charges ("monopoles") do not exist in nature; its field lines are always continuous and closed, traditionally exiting the north pole (N) and entering the south pole (S) to form an unbroken vortex loop. On a planetary scale, Earth's powerful magnetic field is generated by the churning motion of molten iron deep within its outer core. This invisible shield, known as the magnetosphere, acts as a cosmic umbrella that deflects deadly solar wind and deep-space radiation, keeping our atmosphere intact and making life on Earth possible. When these solar particles occasionally breach the shield near the poles, they collide with atmospheric gases to create the stunning visual phenomenon known as the auroras (Northern and Southern Lights).
