What I’ve learned my first two weeks of learning to draw at 33: 1. Art is inherently human. Remove the human experience and you remove the art. There cannot be “ai art,” because you have removed it from the human experience. This should make art feel SOOOO much less intimidating to new artists like myself….because any human is able to make art. It doesn’t matter how good or bad it is. It’s YOU and your brain and soul putting something on paper and that is beautiful 2. Tutorials are your best friend. Art is crazy because you’re connecting this physical tangible learnable skill with your creativity. I feel like my brain is exploding with ideas I can’t wait to bring to life and tutorials are giving me the tools to get there. My favorite on YouTube so far is @pypahs_art ! 3. Get a sketchbook and mess it up. Sketchbooks aren’t supposed to be perfect finished paintings they’re for learning and trying 4. Draw and paint in as many different ways and with different mediums as you feel called to. I’ve been having so much fun trying out wildly different styles as I try to figure out my own style 5. Be bad at it. Because you will be in the beginning. I’m bad at it and that’s okay! The other night I made my best and worst drawing back to back. Progress isn’t linear. 6. You’re never too old to learn to draw, paint, write, write songs, learn an instrument. If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do…just try it. It’s not magic or rocket science it’s just a lot of practice 7. Have fun. That’s kinda the whole point of expression right? Have fun. Feel joy. Express whatever you’re feeling. Take away the seriousness of things needing to be perfect and just start to create. Fall in love with the journey.
