Sheikh Jamiu Bulala was one of the most fascinating Islamic scholars and spiritual figures associated with the Tijaniyyah tradition in Nigeria. Born in Offa in 1919, he became widely known as a powerful preacher, scholar, poet and deeply spiritual man. His reputation extended far beyond his immediate community. According to oral accounts surrounding his final days, there was a particular occasion on March 1 1989, 4 days before his death ,Sheikh Bulala asked his students and those around him to leave the room because he wanted to be alone. Shortly after they left, those outside heard voices coming from the room, voices they believed belonged to beings from the unseen world, speaking with the Sheikh. When the voices eventually stopped, Sheikh Bulala called his students back inside. What they found was something they never forgot. There were gifts and food items that had been brought to the Sheikh. He instructed his students to share them among the elderly, widows and people in need within the community. He then told them that his departure was near.. 4 days later , Sheikh Muhammad Jamiu Bulala died in Offa on Sunday, March 5, 1989, and was buried in his backyard in the presence of thousands of sympathisers. After his death, something unusual happened around Sheikh Bulala’s home. The winds and rain were restless for several days, as though nature itself was mourning the departure of the revered scholar. Even after his burial, people in the surrounding area continued to speak of feeling his presence around his home and its vicinity. For those who loved and followed him, it was as though the physical departure of their Sheikh had not brought an end to his spiritual presence To those who revered him, this was not simply a statement about death. They understood it as a spiritual farewell. Stories about Sheikh Bulala have always been surrounded by accounts of extraordinary spiritual experiences. Some followers regarded him as a wali, a friend of Allah and attributed various karamat, or extraordinary spiritual occurrences, to him. His biography also records the belief among some followers that he possessed unusual spiritual gifts, while acknowledging that his personality and reputation were controversial and understood differently by different groups in Offa. He was not merely remembered as a spiritual figure. He was also a prolific Islamic poet. Among the works associated with him are Qasidat Labayk and Qasidat Nuniyyah, reflecting his deep devotion to Islam and the Prophet Muhammad and his household. Those who knew him described a man who could be deeply loved and, at the same time, extremely strict. He demanded discipline from his followers and was known for a personality that was impossible to ignore. And perhaps that is why stories surrounding his final days have survived for so long. But beyond the dates, books and biographies, there remains the memory of the man himself, Sheikh Jamiu Bulala, the remarkable scholar of Offa whose life became surrounded by stories of spirituality, mystery, discipline and devotion.
