50 Cent was already rapping like this back in 1998 💯 The cypher was recorded at The Hit Factory in New York City for “Shades of Hip Hop.” 50 was joined by Consequence, Noreaga (now known as N.O.R.E.) and Punchline. Kid Capri can also be seen in the room during the session. They rhymed over the instrumental from Noreaga’s “The Change,” which appeared on his debut solo album, “N.O.R.E.,” later that year. 50 opens his section with a line about loving enemies and being careful with friends before continuing with the rest of his verse. 50 was still early in his recording career at the time. He had met Jam Master Jay of Run-D.M.C. in 1996, and Jay helped him learn how to count bars, structure songs and write hooks. In 1998, 50 also made his first official appearance on Onyx’s “React.” The following year, he signed with Columbia Records and began recording “Power of the Dollar,” which was ultimately never officially released. The cypher captures 50 before the mixtape run and mainstream breakthrough that would introduce him to a much wider audience.
