Mos Def was built for cyphers đ Mos Defâs outdoor freestyle is featured in Kevin Fitzgeraldâs âFreestyle: The Art of Rhyme,â a documentary about improvisational rap and the culture surrounding neighborhood cyphers. Built from interviews, live performances and archival material, the film traces freestyle culture across the 1980s and 1990s. The documentary covers freestyle spaces and platforms including âThe Lyricist Lounge,â âProject Blowedâ and âThe Wake Up Show.â MC Supernaturalâs pursuit of a freestyle championship provides one of the filmâs central storylines. Mos Def, The Notorious B.I.G., Wu-Tang Clan, The Roots, Bahamadia, Chali 2na and The Last Poets are among the artists featured. âFreestyle: The Art of Rhymeâ screened at the inaugural Woodstock Film Festival in September 2000, where it won âBest Feature Documentary.â Palm Pictures later opened the film theatrically in the United States on July 16, 2004. By the time the documentary screened at Woodstock, Mos Def had released two Rawkus projects in just over a year. âMos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Starâ arrived on September 29, 1998 with 13 tracks, followed by his 17-track solo debut, âBlack on Both Sides,â on October 12, 1999. âBlack on Both Sidesâ received an RIAA Gold certification on February 2, 2000.
