Last week, @Greenpeace Indonesia activists staged a peaceful protest at the opening of the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026, the largest automotive exhibition in the country. Two banners, "Protect Raja Ampat, Stop Dirty Energy" and "Is Your Car Powered by Forest Destruction?" were unfurled to convey a bold message: the energy transition must not come at the expense of Raja Ampat, the remote archipelago in Indonesia’s Southwest Papua (refered as the epicentre of marine biodiversity by conservation experts) that remains under threat from nickel mining. Greenpeace Indonesia urges the government to halt mining expansion in Raja Ampat and to enforce legal protections for small islands. The battery and electric vehicle industries must also ensure their supply chains are free from environmental destruction and violations of community rights.
