My thoughts only (not scientific fact lol) 1. Cold water = unhappy fish. Urban areas are always a couple degrees warmer due to industry and human activity = happy fish. Haha 2. Cormorants and otters are really hungry in winter and will chase shoals of fish until they get scared themselves. I don’t think cormorants like shallow water so much, nor do they like people! So shallow, noisy, busy spots seem to be a common place to find shoals of fish! 3. During times of flood in larger rivers, fish push upstream into smaller more sheltered streams to avoid the murky/raging water, and sometimes remain here till after spawning. 4. Sometimes there’s extra food to be had (people feeding ducks, waste/excess from mills/factories and of course pints upon pints of maggots which I always seem to be chucking in wherever I go. 😂
