Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot the entire feature on IMAX film cameras, making The Odyssey the first feature film ever shot entirely with IMAX film cameras. To make it possible, IMAX developed a new carbon-fiber camera body, known as the Keighley, together with a custom soundproof housing (“blimp”) that significantly reduced the camera’s operating noise for synchronized dialogue recording. The oversized housing also created a new challenge on set. To help actors maintain natural eye contact, the camera team developed a custom mirror system mounted beside the lens. Over 2.1 million feet of Kodak 65mm film were used during production.
