NITROGEN-FIXING MYTH – Beans don't magically fertilize your garden. Rhizobium bacteria in their roots convert nitrogen from the air into a form the plant can use, but about 70% ends up in the pods and seeds. Harvest the beans, and most of that nitrogen leaves too. For healthier soil, grow beans as a cover crop and cut them before they set pods, leaving the roots to feed the soil.
