Stop mixing up "so" and "so that". Here is the quick rule to remember: "So" introduces a result. It tells us what happened next. Example: It started raining, so I opened my umbrella. "So that" introduces a purpose. It tells us your goal or intention. Example: I opened my umbrella so that I wouldn't get wet. Top tip: If the next part of your sentence uses a modal verb like "can", "could", or "would", you almost certainly need to use "so that".
