This was my mom's house. My husband, our boys, our 300-lb pet pig Oliver and I were all there. The fire came down the hill at night and it moved faster than anything I've ever seen. We left with the clothes we were wearing — no passports, no insurance paperwork, no idea where the family heirlooms were. And because we'd never made a plan for Oliver, we had to come back for him the next day. Here's what I know now that I didn't know then: the planning is quick many steps can happen on the phone that's already in your hand. ▪️ Walk your house once a year with your camera rolling and narrate what you own. That video is your insurance claim. We don't have one. I wish I did. ▪️ Photograph your documents — passport, license, SSN, insurance policy, pet records — and save them to the cloud. ▪️ Save your emergency contacts in your phone, then actually call them so they have yours. Decide now who's picking up whoever can't drive. ▪️ Log your family's medical info in your phone's emergency settings. ▪️ A go bag by the door and a second one in the car. Headlamps instead of candles. A charged power bank in both. ▪️ An evacuation route. A place to meet if you get separated. A plan for your animals. ▪️ Call your insurance company once a year, on a normal day, and ask what you're actually covered for. @Verizon is bringing disaster preparedness workshops, hosted by United Way, to LA — you sit down with people who do this for a living and you leave with a real plan for your family.
