Does the retinol sandwich cancel out your retinoid? A small ex vivo study found that when moisturizer was applied before AND after the retinoid, the retinoid-induced HBEGF gene-expression response dropped. But this was not a clinical trial. It used skin samples from one donor, measured short-term gene expression and did not evaluate acne, wrinkles, collagen or long-term results. The sandwich method may buffer retinoid activity—but this study does not prove that it cancels its clinical benefits.
