Getting shot does NOT automatically mean the bullet needs to come out. In fact, sometimes trying to retrieve a bullet can cause more tissue damage than simply leaving it alone. In trauma, treating the damage the bullet caused is usually far more important than finding the bullet itself. What matters most is where the bullet traveled, what structures were injured, and where the bullet ultimately came to rest. Retained bullets only become more concerning when they’re in places like a joint, affecting nerves or blood vessels, migrating, associated with infection, or contributing to elevated blood lead levels which is rare. Did you think a bullet always needed to be removed? #EmergencyMedicine #Trauma #MedicalEducation #mythbusting
