This is Lyra. She was the runt of her litter, born small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. At one day old she got injured, and after a stint at MSU’s vet hospital she spent weeks recovering at my place. Sleeping by the fireplace. Curled up with my dogs. Falling asleep on my chest most evenings. We’ve been bonded ever since. Here’s what most people don’t get to see: pigs are consistently ranked among the most cognitively complex animals on the planet. Researchers at Purdue trained pigs to play video games using joysticks. They recognize their names, solve puzzles, hold grudges, dream, and use more than 20 distinct vocalizations to communicate with each other. A 2022 study even mapped pig calls to specific emotional states using machine learning. Lyra comes when called. She flops over for belly rubs. She has a best friend named Little Dude, and you’ll usually find them napping belly-to-belly. She’s not a what. She’s a who. #PigFacts #FarmLife #AnimalRescue #CuteAnimals #BarnSanctuary
