A checkerboard normally gives your eyes a pretty easy job. Straight rows, straight columns, predictable repetition. This one does the opposite. The entire design is made with colored sand, using repeating red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and black shapes that curve around a circular center. Instead of staying in a rigid grid, the checker pattern bends into four sweeping sections, making the surface look rounded, stretched, twisted, or almost inflated. The white starburst in the middle creates an even stronger focal point, while the black sand between the bright colors gives each section enough contrast to stay crisp. From a distance, the individual pieces start merging into something that looks like a rainbow kaleidoscope, warped checkerboard, geometric mandala, radial optical illusion, or psychedelic circular pattern. There’s also something satisfying about how mathematical the finished artwork feels even though the material itself is loose colored sand.
