A 20-year-old Ohio college student died after walking onto an interstate and being struck by a tractor-trailer, just weeks after ICE fitted him with an ankle monitor. Pierre Damas Bel had written publicly about the “shame and humiliation” he felt wearing the device, and his family says he was struggling with its impact before his death. Bel came to the U.S. in 2024 and had pursued academics and athletics, with hopes of eventually attending medical school. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said on Tuesday that Bel had "great dreams about what he could do in this country and what he could contribute to his country."
