Ron DeSantis angrily denounced a state grand jury investigation after CBS News Miami reported that his administration misappropriated $10 million in taxpayer money into the Hope Florida Foundation. The grand jury found that key officials diverted the money from a Medicaid settlement and passed it through multiple organizations before it reached two political action committees and the Republican Party of Florida, where it was used to oppose a 2024 ballot measure to legalize marijuana. The grand jury said there was insufficient evidence to charge anyone criminally but concluded that taxpayer money was misused for political purposes. DeSantis rejected the findings, saying there was “no diversion of any Medicaid funds” and that the settlement was legally sound and in the state’s interest. Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Jolly called the findings an orchestrated scheme and said he would reopen the investigation if elected. Jolly also urged the Florida Legislature to require future Medicaid settlement money to go directly to general revenue and called on Republican candidate Byron Donalds to support reopening the investigation.
