Four new measles cases have been reported as part of an outbreak connected with a metro Atlanta daycare, Georgia health officials say. The Georgia Department of Public Health says the cases were close contacts of a case confirmed Aug. 18, and the children were either unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated. Health officials are working to identify other close contacts. The new cases bring Georgia’s total to 11 this year, the second-highest number in the state in the last 10 years, behind 18 cases in 2019. Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air, causing symptoms including high fever, runny nose, cough, red, watery eyes and a rash that typically appears three to five days after the first symptoms. More than 2,700 cases have been reported nationwide this year, according to CDC data. If you become sick or believe you have been exposed, health officials advise contacting a healthcare provider immediately and calling ahead before visiting a doctor’s office.
