The ‘don’t touch money’ myth is back again! This myth has been circulating for years, with newer versions involving fentanyl, but toxicologists, the CDC and medical experts have repeatedly debunked the idea that you can overdose simply by touching fentanyl powder.
Brief skin contact is not expected to cause an overdose and if you do touch an unknown powder, the recommendation is to wash your hands and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Small children are a bigger risk because they may put things in their mouths.
Also there’s usually a second part to this myth which is claiming that it’s used for human trafficking. That has also been repeatedly debunked.
There are no credible patterns of zip ties, dollar bills, car seats or similar objects being used this way.
Real trafficking usually involves exploitation by someone the person knows, trusts or depends on. If you’re looking for zip ties instead of looking in your DMs, you’re looking in the wrong spot.
That said, if something feels suspicious, there’s no harm in reporting it.
Being cautious is fine, but safety advice only helps if it’s accurate. #safetytips #factcheck #myth #viral #psa
