Dunalastair House is the site of an earlier house built by the great poet chieftain, Alexander Robertson, whose support for the Jacobite cause to return the Stuarts back on the throne of Scotland resulted in the destruction of his home. In 1853 the estate was sold by George Duncan Robertson, 18th Chief of Clan Robertson, to General Sir John Macdonald of Dalchosnie, who commanded the land forces in Scotland. He demolished the house and built the present one in 1859 to a design by Andrew Heiton, a Perth-based architect, who also designed the Atholl Palace Hotel. During the Second World War, the house was requisitioned and used as a school for Polish children. In the mid 1950s Dunalastair was abandoned following the death of the current owner’s grandmother, and the lead from the roof was stolen in the sixties, leaving the interiors exposed – the reason for the decay of the building to its current condition.
