The population of the critically endangered world’s heaviest parrot has now hit a record high of 325. The Kākāpō is the world’s only nocturnal and flightless parrot, once abundant across New Zealand. It’s also the heaviest parrot in the world, with each one weighing up to 4kg. In 1995 a bird recovery programme was introduced, at the time the Kākāpō population was only 51, and as they only breed once every two to four years depending on the native rimu trees producing a large number of berries, saving the endangered species was a real challenge. #Kākāpō #Parrot #NewZealand #World #C4News
