In the early 1900s, a movement in Japan challenged the way children were taught art and encouraged them to draw freely. But the right tools did not exist, so a teacher left his job and helped create Sakura CRAY-PAS, combining the qualities of crayons and pastels into the world’s first oil pastel. The invention spread through Japanese classrooms and helped inspire an entirely new category of art materials.
