WERE YOU TAUGHT TO PUT YOUR HEAD ACROSS THE BODY? What’s the most dangerous tackling habit you were ever taught was “good technique”? I’ve been hearing more coaches argue that putting your head across the ball-carrier’s body is “smart” because it stops extra yards. Maybe it does. But if the technique saves five yards while repeatedly putting an athlete’s brain in the collision, what exactly are we protecting? That was the problem I saw with Max. He had just turned 18, and before I could improve his collision ability, I had to strip away the habits he had been taught to trust. He didn’t need to become more reckless. He needed to learn how to control another human without using his head as the primary stopping mechanism. So we rebuilt everything: his entry, body position, shoulder connection, arm strength, clamp and ability to transfer force safely through the target. In one week, Max went from trying to survive contact to controlling it. That is the difference between teaching someone to make a tackle and teaching them how to own a collision. #nfl #football #collision #coach
