“It’s just anxiety.” Which felt like being told: it’s all in your head. Here’s what I didn’t know then — and what most people never get told: There are two completely different things that get called anxiety. There’s anxiety as an emotion. The nervousness before a big moment. And then there’s anxiety as a state. Where your nervous system is generating hundreds of physical symptoms — constantly — with no obvious trigger. No explanation. Those are not the same thing. And treating one like the other is why so many people spend years feeling misunderstood. Like they’re somehow the problem. You’re not broken. You’re not lacking something. This isn’t unresolved trauma or a chemical imbalance or a personality flaw. Your nervous system became deeply sensitive to stress. That’s it. And here’s why that matters: Breathing exercises won’t fix sensitivity. Cold plunges won’t fix sensitivity. Coping tools were built for anxiety as an emotion. You’re dealing with something different entirely. Which means the path out is different too.
