Here’s a little songwriting challenge for you: Try finishing this section in your own way. Write the last line, and pay attention to what feels emotionally true for the character, not just what rhymes: “Good people drink and good people cuss, they lie and they cheat and they hurt who they love, Now, I wouldn't say it, if I didn't know that some people change, -your last line goes here-” Listen for the character. Who is speaking? What have they learned? And what does the next word need to do? A simple word like but, when, so, or ’cause can create the turn that leads you into the heart of the song.
